Welcome to Pomeroy School!

Summer 2018

Dear Pomeroy Families,

It is with great enthusiasm and excitement that I am serving as your Principal for the 2018-19 school year, which marks my 16th year in Education and my 13th year in the Santa Clara Unified School District. I am thrilled and honored to serve it at our school. I have heard nothing but amazing things about the Pomeroy Community and this year I look forward to being a learner of the community and immersing myself in all that makes Pomeroy an outstanding school. Everyone has been very warm and welcoming to me and the transition has been smooth.

This year, I look forward to collaborating with staff and parents, in an effort to support our diverse group of students as we work to lay all the great foundational work that takes place in an elementary school around educating the whole child. Our teachers implement the Common Core State Standards into all their lessons and work hard to meet the needs of each and every child. We use the Teachers College Reading and Writing Workshop format in our classrooms to support literacy, Origo Math and have recently adopted a new FOSS curriculum for science that supports the new Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). We also provide Elementary P.E., music, a Wellness Center, and for the 2018-19 school year, will be rolling out our new Maker's Space. We have classrooms that use Social Thinking to help students better develop their communication skills and are a PBIS school, which promotes positive discipline and acknowledges students for what they do well and right. I look forward to visiting classrooms, supporting teachers and watching your children flourish! I am confident that we will continue to provide our students with a truly challenging and enriching school experience.

My philosophy of education is that every child can learn and that children flourish when they are in thriving environments. Children have natural curiosity and have a desire to learn. When in a supportive, safe, trusting and caring environment, they will take the risks needed to explore their curiosities and desire to learn. It does take a village to maintain a thriving environment and I believe teachers, administrators and parents must work together in order to provide the environment needed to cultivate that. Positive relationships are the building blocks of all thriving environments and this year, my goal is to build positive relationships with the Pomeroy community as a whole, and I encourage everyone to do the same. Together, we can work to prepare students of all ages and abilities to succeed in an ever-changing world.

I encourage you to stop in, introduce yourself, and say hello. I encourage you to attend school events and get involved! If there is anything I can assist you with, please let me know.

Respectfully,

Ms. Christy Chalfant
