A Note from the Principal HAPPY NEW YEAR 2012!! As we welcome the new year, most of us think of things that we might do differently or change a habit for the upcoming year to better ourselves. We can all start the new year with a healthy mind and body by taking care of ourselves and taking part in some good habits for the upcoming year. “Initiative” (moving into action) is January’s megaskill. Take the initiative to help your child develop some good healthy habits to help them be focused and successful in school. • Have your child do his/her homework before or immediately after dinner (not in the morning before school) • Make sure your child gets enough sleep (10 hours minimum is the recommended time for children ages 6-12 yrs of age) • Make sure your child is appropriately dressed for the cold winter days (sweater or coat with your child’s name marked inside in case it gets lost) • Have your child eat a healthy breakfast at home or drop off your child early enough to purchase a breakfast in the cafeteria (7:45am-8:00am) Children should arrive no later than 8am to eat breakfast in the cafeteria. • Help your child be prepared when coming to school (homework, lunch or lunch money, signed papers, etc. in his/her backpack) REMINDER: Classroom instruction cannot be interrupted to give messages to your child or your child’s teacher unless there is a family emergency. • Arrive on time to school. Be sure you are leaving early enough to get your child to school before the bell rings 8:10 or earlier. Children may proceed to the blacktop area to line up for class when the 8:00am bell rings. (If children arrive late, they miss out on important information the teacher shares with the class in the first couple minutes of instruction.) • Pick your child up on time. Make sure they know who will be picking them up after school. • If there is a concern you have regarding your child and would like to talk with your child’s teacher, you may arrange a time to speak with your child’s teacher by calling or emailing him/her to set up an appointment. - Tricia Ringel, Principal

CENTRAL PARK ELEMENTARY: SCUSD BOARD OF EDUCATION POSTPONES OPENING Due to an unexpected population drop and unused capacity in neighboring schools, Central Park Elementary will not be opening in 2012. Since efforts to update the former Mariposa school site are already underway and there is an increasing demand for spots in SCUSD’s Millikin Basics+ program, the Millikin Basics + program will still open at the former Mariposa site in Fall 2012. A process will start soon to find a lessee for the site. Leasing the Millikin site and the postponement of opening Central Park Elementary, combined with expanding the Millikin Basics + program and fully utilizing the neighboring elementary school sites, will save Santa Clara Unified School District nearly $1Million Dollars from its general fund. This savings will be critical as SCUSD strives to maintain academic programs even as it endures increasing budget cuts from the state budget fallout. For more information regarding this change, please contact SCUSD at (408) 423-2005.

Transitional KindergartenIf your child’s birthday falls between 11/1/2007 – 12/2/2007, your child is Eligible for Transitional Kindergarten in Santa Clara Unified School District. School isn't just about developing a child's intellectual capabilities; there are emotional, social, and physical factors to consider. Allowing an extra year for our young five year olds provides an opportunity for students to grow in these areas before facing the rigor of the academic world. The State of California is now offering a new program called Transitional Kindergarten to help meet the needs of these younger 5 year olds. For more information click this link, or contact your elementary school secretary or visit the Santa Clara Unified School District website at www.santaclarausd.org New Law Regarding Tdap Pertussis Booster ShotsPertussis (also known as whooping cough) is widespread in California. There is a new law which requires all students who will be entering 7th – 12th grade next fall to show proof of having received a Tdap Pertussis booster shot given after their 10th birthday.More information regarding this law can be found at www.santaclarausd.org Prepay for School Lunches OnlinePlease take advantage of the options to prepay your student's meal accounts. Prepaid meal accounts help the lunch lines go faster and gives students more time to eat, relax, and play. It also gives you the peace of mind of not having to worry about looking for lunch money every day or worry that it might get lost, stolen or used for other things other than lunch.
